In January 2018, Shadow picked up an internal infection which ended into a large abscess at its neck which quickly erupted into a large wound. The vet cleaned and stitched the wound and gave him a course of antibiotic and painkillers. I was to regularly inject Hydrogen Peroxide (20 vol) into the wound to stop further infection. A couple of mornings later, I discovered that Shadow had probably scratched the wound with its back paw pulling the stitches off and the wound was wide open. The skin quickly dried up and could not be stitched back on. I cut it off and kept pouring the Hydrogen Peroxide which eventually started to have negative effects on the wound.
I was faced with the awful dilemma of having to spend larger sums of money on vet bills or putting an old companion of the family to sleep. For several instinctive reasons, I decided instead to try a mixture of raw honey and propolis tincture on the wound. Shadow very quickly acquired a taste for the honey and scratched the wound to lick its back paw afterwards, as a result the wound was not healing. I waited for Shadow to be asleep before applying the raw honey in the evening and in the morning I would put drops of propolis tincture in and around the wound which also helped to keep flies away from the wound.
Three weeks later the wound healed completely and Shadow is now its former self as the alpha dog. I took pictures of the wound as it was initially and during the healing process but I shall not post them here as the average person will find them gruesome. However, I would be happy to share with anybody who is interested in having more details on this effective and truly low cost treatment.
